2018 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2018 Honda CR-V

2018 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2018 Honda CR-V in Edinburg, TX

SUVs continue to be among the most popular vehicles in America. Two of the nation’s most beloved compact crossover SUVs are the Mazda CX-5 and the Honda CR-V. For 2018, both the CX-5 and the CR-V offer incredible efficiency, affordable pricing, and fantastic standard features. But which of the two is the better SUV? It’s a close call, but the 2018 Mazda CX-5

2018 Honda CR-V

$24,150  MSRP  $24,250
2.5-liter I-4  Engine  2.4-liter I-4
187 hp  Horsepower  84 hp
25 City/31 Hwy  Fuel Economy Rating  28 City/34 Hwy

A mere $100 separates the starting price of the 2018 Mazda CX-5 and the 2018 Honda CR-V; the Mazda is, of course, cheaper. But despite being slightly more affordable, the Mazda CX-5 base model offers more standard content than the Honda CR-V base model.

Both the 2018 Mazda CX-5 and the 2018 Honda CR-V earned exceptional ratings in crash testing, both from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). However, for 2018, Mazda has made forward-collision warning and low-speed automatic emergency braking standard across all its trim levels, giving the CX-5 an edge over the CR-V.

Steering and Handling

The CR-V and the CX-5 feature similar performance ratings, but the Mazda CX-5 drives better with that performance. Handling and steering are superior; this is especially noticeable around turns.

Base Engines

Though the base model of the CX-5 is more affordable than the CR-V’s base model, the engine beneath the 2018 CX-5’s hood is more potent than the one in the 2018 CR-V base model. The Mazda CX-5’s 2.5-liter I-4 creates 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, slightly more than the Honda CR-V’s 2.4-liter I-4’s 184 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque.

Mazda is famous for its KODO Soul of Motion design philosophy. This design concept makes the CX-5 sportier, appearing as if in motion even when at a standstill. The Honda CR-V’s styling leaves a lot to be desired — it looks like a generic SUV with no eye-catching appeal. Exterior color options for the 2018 Mazda CX-5 include Sonic Silver Metallic, Eternal Blue Mica, Deep Crustal Blue Mica, Jet Black Mica, Machine Gray Metallic, Snowflake White Pearl Mica, and Soul Red Crystal Metallic.

Interior Design

Inside, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 continues to be more appealing than the 2018 Honda CR-V. It features a sleeker dashboard, a cleaner center console, and more intuitive controls.
