Mazda and Volkswagen have made a single power plant option available for their respective hatchback platforms. Under the hood of the 2019 Mazda3 Hatchback is the naturally aspirated SKYACTIV®-G 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that is also attached to the SKYACTIV®-G six-speed automatic transmission. It will make 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel-drive versions of the new Mazda3 will be able to produce 26 miles per gallon in the city and 35 miles per gallon on the highway. Buyers choosing i-ACTIV AWD®-equipped models will see 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.
VW Golf owners will be getting a turbocharged, 1.4-liter, four-cylinder engine attached to either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. Both gear-changers will produce 147 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. All versions of the 2019 Golf are only available with front-wheel-drive.
