Is Mazda going to make an electric vehicle?
There are a lot of changes coming to the Mazda lineup of engines. We’ve already covered the automaker’s coming diesel engine, but they aren’t done by any means. So, is Mazda going to make an electric vehicle? We can’t confirm anything definitively, but all signs appear to be pointing in that direction. An article we came across in the course of looking something up for a customer really piqued our interest. It was written by Fred Lambert for electrek.com and the story contains some spy shots of a redesigned Mazda crossover SUV being tested in Europe and supposedly is powered by an electric motor. Let’s take a look at what the reporter found.

The quick and dirty summary is this: Mazda appears to be testing an all-new electrically powered crossover SUV that isn’t matched to an existing vehicle platform currently in production by the manufacturer. In fact, Lambert supposes that it’s a new variant that falls somewhere between the Mazda CX-3 and Mazda CX-5. Several members of the Bert Ogden Mazda in Edinberg team believe it could actually be the upcoming Mazda CX-30 with an electric power plant under the hood.

Will Mazda have electric vehicles in the United States?
Anytime rumors start about Mazda building something new, we have to mentally prepare ourselves for the fact that it might not actually be available in the United States. However, this probably won’t be the case with a potential electric Mazda vehicle. First, Mazda is partnering with Toyota to build a joint production facility in Alabama that is reportedly for electric vehicles. Also, Mazda promised back in 2016 that it would be producing EVs by this year. However, a lot could have changed during the intervening three years.

If Mazda is planning a major announcement like the addition of EVs to its lineup, our best guess is that it will happen at the Los Angeles Auto Show which is scheduled to start Nov. 22.
