It shouldn’t be a huge surprise that a coming version of the Mazda6 will feature a diesel engine. After all, the Mazda6 and Mazda CX-5 have shared a common base powertrain for a while now. By making this efficient technology available on the automaker’s most popular sedan chassis, Mazda is rededicating itself to a portion of the automotive industry that has been put out to pasture by many other vehicle manufacturers.
How much power will the Mazda6 diesel engine make?
We haven’t found any confirmed numbers for horsepower, torque or fuel economy for a diesel-powered Mazda6. However, it seems more than reasonable to expect the sedan engine to be on par with what the Mazda CX-5 produces. The Signature version of the Mazda CX-5 with the SKYACTIV®-D engine will make 168 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. Also, the diesel version of the Mazda CX-5 is reported to be able to record 27 miles per gallon in the city and 30 miles per gallon on the highway.
It is well within the realm of possibility that a SKYACTIV®-D-equipped Mazda6 could match, or even slightly exceed these numbers.
